So, what does a volcanic eruption look like from space?

FUCKING BADDASS is what it looks like. The International Space Station happened to catch Sarychev Volcano (in the Kuril Islands) in the process of blowing it's top.

That's not all the awesomeness. The volcano ejected a whole shitload of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, where it is carried across the world on high altitude winds. The end product? Badass sunsets!

People across the globe have been taking pics of the sunsets. Go outside for yourself and check it out.

First you'd see standing waves of white. These are actually clouds of the volcanic aerosols.

Then, the sky turns purple as the sun goes down. The aerosols scatter more blue light, which when mixed with the reddened light of the setting sun, makes purple.


If the weather's nice at sunset for the next week or so, poke your head outside and take a look. You might be rewarded.

I'll have to make sure to check out the sunsets the next couple days. we had overcast skies for awhile, so they should be clearing up i hope.

sidenote: been making my way home about sunrise a few days lately, and pretty cool that venus and mars are easy to see right now with the naked eye. I heard jupiter is up there too, but haven't been able to spot it.

A volcanic sunset from late last week over Alberta.

Nothing of that sort in Marie Land.

Experienced a mind blowing sunset last night here. Look to the west, the sky was on fire with yellows, oranges, reds and pinks of all shades, intensely magnified through the intricate folds of multi-layered cloud formations. Was so intense it was utterly surreal outside, everything around was glowing yellow/orange. Once I snapped out of the hypnotic grasp of this, I turned and looked east and my jaw just fuckin dropped. Shimmering against a clear blue patch of sky, were the most perfect, fully visible arcs of a double rainbow I literally have ever seen. Was truly astounding. Not two minutes later a cool, light rain began to fall for about a minute or two, then stopped. One of those rains where the source clouds are mysteriously absent. Not exaggerating, was easily a top 5 meteorological moment for me. Love that stuff.
