Can you transfer things from older windoze versions? I'm using syncback right now.

I was going from XP to 7. Anything older, I don't know. Why would you still be using anything older than XP anyway?

I meant XP. Don't think I'll use the wizard though. I prefer to select the files I want to keep and transfer them manually...

Just try it. You'll be pleased.

For sure. I'll try it on mine first, and if it works good then I'll treat my wife with it. Can't wait! :yay:

Macs? Windowze 95?

Oh, the humanity!

IRT Choda: I used that Files and Transfer wizard when I had to redo my parents PC...it does the job well going from one XP box to another.

Carrying over shit from different versions though, it's always been fucky. I'd say you're better off doing my 3 step approach.

1. Copy everything from C:\Documents and Settings\username to a backup device (note: you can save yourself serveral hundred megs by running the Disk Cleanup utility first and deleting all your temporary internet files)

2. Fuck everything else.

3. Redo the PC, copy over the relevant folders (Favorites, My Documents, Desktop) from the old profile to the new one. You can also look at what programs were installed before by going into the Start Menu folder.

I bought a 16GB memory stick. I can fit all the important stuff on that when transferring. It's also good for swapping entire TV series and cracked games with others.

Crysis Warhead is a bit shit btw. Though I don't think anyone here suspected otherwise.

Does Windows 7 do the ready boost thing like Vista? I would assume so.

For those not familiar with the feature, you can plug in a flash drive and Vista can use it as extra system memory.

Dunno, never had much reason to test it, since I've already got 4GB of memory.

That, and you can get 4GB of high-end Corsair XMS DDR3 for less than $100, so why limit yourself to something over a USB drive?

NOOOOOOOO...seriously?

Dun feel bad Span, I actually downloaded the Crysis demo, just to see what it'd do under Windows 7. Looks good, can crank the sucker up real high, but it's still a shitte game.

Hell, I'm still using XP. Windows 7 interests me, but my computer pretty much serves as an innaweb surfboard and not much else, so I can't be arsed.

It looks wank compared to Farcry 2.

As for that USB stick memory thing. I've been told that it's not really worth the effort. Otherwise I'd use my 16BG stick... not that I'm using anything that takes up all my 4GB of memory. The only limitation I've hit so far is GT4 using all my video memory. All 1GB of it. I've yet to see my proc get past 20%

You can also dl Belarc Advisor and run it to get a list of hard/soft -ware on the PC, as well as some keys for apps plus other good info. All the free download stuff like Zone Alarm, AVG, IrFanView, Firefox, Crap Cleaner, etc you could dl all the current versions of, burn them to a cd/dvd and have them ready to go - plus all the drivers for your hardware. If you don't have an XP Service Pack 3 disc, go ahead and dl the .exe and save it as well so you can install it right away and avoid wasting time later.

Really, the more you do of this shit ahead of time, the more hassle you avoid later. It also helps in a situation where a setup up problem fucks your internet connection and prevents you from dl'ing shit until you get it fixed.

I keep a slipstreamed version of my OS with SP3 built in, plus it is setup so I can just "hit any key to boot from cd..." and come back about 39 minutes later ready to start installing apps. Also, I have another disc with all current drivers for my hardware, plus a backup of my firefox favorites (I have hundreds, so I can't afford to lose them) and gaming profiles (basically all the settings/configurations files from the folder Sac mentioned, minus all the big data files like photos, music and movies). I have a networked drive named "Maintenance" where, along with Windows-related utilities, I keep all the current full game patches for Battlefield, COD, FSX, IL-2 and all the most recent releases of the mods I play.

Seriously, I want to get back in action ASAP after a reinstall/new install. I don't want to be wasting time watching the dl bar progress any more than I have to.
