Guess a functioning healthcare system would be useful with that kind of thing.

It's all about fear. Keep the public scared and a government can do pretty much what it wants.
At all times a small segment of the population will engage in reckless behavior regardless of how many laws are on the books.

From what i've heard with the h1n1, there was a similar strain that went around in the 1970's. So that is why it isn't that bad for most people, but also why young people who weren't exposed to it before can get very sick from it. So at least in the US couple in the fact that many young people don't have any insurance; it could get worse than it should.

Well, it's just like the Spanish flu as well I believe, hence the reason why some old people do not fear from it.

But the supreme fear was that it could recombine with the avian flu virus, which was very deadly (death rate > 30% I think) but couldn't spread very well. This one spreads like butter but is not very deadly. However, it looks like those virus can mingle really well in some animals, so potentially, it could have been very bad...

The Spanish flu killed millions of people in 1918. The body count of H1N1 is still extremely low, even compared to common flus. Fuck the mainstream news media and the hype monster! I can't believe people are still panicked about this shit.

The media blow it out of proportion, but there is good reason not to take it too lightly...

It may not be killing that many people, but do you want to risk being amongst that low count?

Thing is with these things is that it could well be that it's had so little impact BECAUSE of the hysteria and general panic surrounding it. Just like the millenium bug. Everyone goes around saying what a damp squib it was and how we were worried about nothing... well, had we not worried and done nothing then it may well have been a complete disaster.

Fear can be good. It evolved in us for a reason.

It's just like any other flu, it kills off the old, the very young, and the sickly of the two, first. No surprise here, move along, move along.

I don't think so. It had little impact because the virus simply isn't a serious threat. The "fear" was simply fearmongering pumped out by the news networks.

Does the UK have the 24 hour news networks like CNN and FoxNews? Is there some kind of 24 hour BBC News channel? If not, you might be missing out on what I'm talking about. The presenters on these news channels almost shout at the audience about what virus/criminal/terrorist/consumer product is going to kill us all next, 24/7/365. It's fucking disgusting and unnecessary.

I don't think that's true. The old for example seem to be more resisting than against the 'regular' flu for example (see above).

Agree with sweaty. :ass:

This is fun.

@ First. Everyone agree with Darwin, evolution et cetera.
@ Second. When Darwin and his little buddies knocks on your door, things suddenly changes.
