Frontlines

Postby Wunderschlung on Thu Sep 24, 2009 11:09 am

This is the game that i thought would fill BF2s shoes, I thought it would take off online in a big way.
The other night there were 8 people in the World playing it online, thats not enough for one game!

Im playing through the single player now, its great.
Engine is good, good range of weapons, the drones are cool and are not just a gimmick.

Its got all the makings of a great online squad shooter.

Why did it not take off?
What did you think of it?

It never piqued my interest. Something changed in my gaming tastes, shooters don't jazz me at the mo. Prolly cos every one I tried after BF2 was a letdown. I think some of the GN people were playing it when it was out. If it's a solid game but nobody is playing it, that speaks of shoddy server stability or other issues like that.

It didn't take off because the game was released half-finished, and the developers admitted as much about 6 months after release - the old "make the deadline" dilemma. The game had a host of issues such as no joystick support, limited maps, and stability issues with dual core systems, but subsequent (and very slow) patches ironed it all out.

However, by then the player base had dwindled to virtually nil.

I myself finally uninstalled it last month. I did enjoy it, but without other players it is worthless. The SP campaign is miserably short and linear so there is no replay value.

^^^Ive been hearing this from a few people now, so I get the picture.
Its a great shame as so far i think its what we were all waiting for, its a damn good game.
Its forte would be online though, and that seems to have blew up, so its dead.

I hope they bring out a spin off sequel that rolls out all polished, but if the first one flopped, they tend not to make another.
Fucking shame.

I loved those drones, though. I felt like a bastard for using them, but just imagining how pissed off the other guy was for such a cheap kill was always hilarious to me. You just zoom up slowly behind some fuck and POW! Worse than being sniped in BF2 by a long shot.

Here's where I impaled some dude on a drone:

Are those drones easy to use? How easy are they to shoot down? Does look a very cheap and annoying kill!

I prefer the fliers; the ground drones tend to hang up on stuff all the time. Imagine it as you being a sniper with a flying claymore that you can send after your enemies rather than wait for them to come to it. So, yes, its kind of cheap. AND HILARIOUS!

But they can be shot down or blown up by another drone.

A bunch of us beta tested that game and Slade's right - they released it half finished.

There are some great aspects to that game ( the weapons were awesome, in game class upgrades worked well, and the whole "frontline" concept for instance), but there were a couple of really big issues that I had with the game that were deal breakers. I'm trying to remember what they were now but iirc it was something to do with the inability to communicate in game with squadmates (or anyone really) and the tendency of games to be really one-sided rape fests during beta testing.
