Horror flicks

Postby Chodaboy on Sun Oct 04, 2009 10:10 pm

So we're approaching Halloween. We all need a big scare. But scary movies aren't that scary anymore. Seriously. Who knows of a good one? What scares you?

I'm scared to death of werewolves. You wanna scare me? Turn into a wolf. Funny because I like wolves. It's people who turn into them that freak me out... :freak:

Maybe an American werewolf in London? I remember the scene where they're chased across the land by the werewolf and attacked and one of them gets killed... Nothing good can happen to you in England. See??
Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription.. is more cowbell!

The Howling, and The Wolfen, which is more about wolf spirits rather than actual werewolves but the net effect is similar.

Silver Bullet, Wolf (with Jack Nicholson), The Curse of the Werewolf with Oliver Reed (1961), and although I haven't seen it Dog Soldiers is supposed to be good.

I haven't really been scared in a long while - what gets to me is when the director chooses to approach/cross a certain area, such as the infant being in danger in the remake of The Hills Have Eyes. As a father that spoke to me on a more visceral level than it would have a decade ago. I will never show Aliens v Predators: Requiem to my wife as the scene in the hospital nursery would have totally shot her shit out the window.

Oh yeah, The Company of Wolves is another werewolf flick you may want to check out. It's set in England, too.

Yeah, seen the howling, it was pretty scary. The part when the werewolf comes into the office and slowly kills that terrified woman... :freak: Win! I'm like you, now that I have my own, I have trouble watching scenes involving kids in danger or being hurt. Just can't take it. Unless it's Macaulay Culkin, then I'd cheer with the killer!

There are quite a few I've never actually seen that landed on my netflix list: the thing, halloween (the original), the original texas chainsaw massacre, hellraiser... not sure they're scary, but halloween might be.

If you want something that might freak you out, you may consider Feast (2005), Slither (2006) or Splinter (2008).

Drag Me To Hell is a brilliant film, sometimes just as funny as scary. [rec] is another I'd recommend.

There's Dog Soldiers if you like werewolves, it's a bit shit though.

[rec] is not particularly scary or thrilling throughout but the last few minutes gave me goosebumps.

The ones that really creep me out are the Japanese ones. Namely The Grudge and The Ring. Japanese versions are better, Hollywood remakes are more accessible.

I like supernatural ghostie ones. The Changeling or The Others, shit like that.

Yeah, the end of [rec] was ridiculously tense. I think it made the film. Wolf Creek is cool in a 'could actually happen' kind of way.

Apparently Trick 'r Treat is brilliant, not sure if it's on DVD yet though? I really liked Them too.

Maybe I should try slither again... [rec] wasn't bad, yeah, the end was very, very tense, but I was glad when that reporter chick died... anyone saw "let the right one in"? Not particularly scary but very weird... definitely Trick 'r treat, it looked really good, it landed my netflix list as soon as I saw the preview... how good is the Thing by John Carpenter?

Carpenter's Thing is truer to the source material than the Howard Hawks version, and regardless of how you may feel about Kurt Russell it is a very good film. Let the Right One In has already been green-lit for an American remake.

[rec] is the original version of Quarantine, right?

A recent movie that got to me a little was The Descent, about the chick spelunkers. Mostly it was the scenes with tight spaces and such, as I used to go caving in Florida and sometimes thinking about those long crawls on your belly hoping not to get stuck with your arms pinned to your sides and having your helmet light go out is still awesome to this day.

Let The Right One In was pretty cool, but you're right. Very, very weird! I've heard The Descent is pretty sound, meant to be some pretty scary scenes involving night vision. The Thing is alright, not particularly scary though.

I was really disappointed with Let the Right One In. The little vampire girl is cute though.

The Descent was okay. Shitty ending though. Didn't like that at all.

That new Pandorum looks okay. Blatant rip-off of Event Horizon but looks okay.

Talking of Event Horizon rips, anyone seen Sunshine by Danny Boyle? Genuinely good film. Probs a lot better than EH actually.

It was okay. Better scifi than Event Horizon but nowhere near as tense IMO.

Sunshine was nice but the introduction of a space serial killer was completely unnecessary. Should have kept focusing on technical failure, the unforgiving cold vacuum of space and the burning intensity of the sun as antagonists.

Seriously pisses me off thinking about how great it could have been.
