I've come across probably 10 laptops at work that people want me to work on, all newer, all with Vista, and all with only 1 gig of memory standard. 90% of their problems are spyware, which slows the damn POS's down even more. I usually get 'em an additional gig for $30, clean it out, and they worship me like I'm some kind of miracle worker because their laptop is so fast now.

The moral of the story is: Vista is an evil, evil, evil operating system that just needs to fucking die, and Windows 7 can't get here fast enough.

Good luck with that.

My aunt works for a community college, and I always get the 'educational burned 1000's of times' copy from her whenever something new comes out. Whats great is, it's totally untracable. I have a copy of XP I've installed on well over 100 PC's using the same CD key

Here's a question, Sac. I got a laptop from a cousin to repair. Her ex-bf took it and gave it to a friend who apparently tried to upgrade XP Home to Pro but fucked something up. Now almost every service is disabled, and even though I reset them all to default, after a AV sweep and reboot they got disabled again. I can't find any info online about something that can shutdown services like this. Any ideas what may be up?

I'm considering reinstalling Windows but she has no OS disc and I don't think I trust her enough to use one of my "discounted" discs.

Moving parts like your fans and CPU have so many hours of life in them, so leaving the machine running will shorten the life of those parts. However, turning a machine on and off risks damage from parts expanding and contracting as the machine heats up and cools down. <-- not sure if that's true, but that's what I've heard.

I heard this a long time ago also, apparently its only a big deal in colder climes.....then i heard that modern puters dont care anymore.

Honestly Slade, it sounds like the tard got about halfway through the installation, then reset the machine. You're getting some major version conflicts between the Services running, and Windows can't decide what to do, so it goes into an ultra-Safe Mode to avoid screwing up the machine even more.

I've never even attempted an upgrade from Home to Pro in all the years that XP has been out, simply because I always had a copy of Pro on-hand and would redo the machine rather than attempt an upgrade. I still remember going from Windows 3.11 and upgrading to Windows 98 (before I realized all you had to do was let it scan the 3.11 floppy disks) and had nothing but problems with any upgrade.

Pure and simple, I do nothing but fresh installs. You're better off reinstalling from scratch.

In about an hour here, check your PM's. I'll give you a personal link to my untracable version of XP. CD key is DP7CM-PD6MC-6BKXT-M8JJ6-RPXGJ. I'd suggest burning with IMGburn. I don't want to put the link here out in the open as you don't know whose looking.

Anyone else wants it, just let me know.

IRT Sac

Thanks for the PM.

I figured that was the case with the laptop - considering what a border-line retard the ex-bf was, his 'techy' friend only needed more than 10 teeth in his head to qualify as a local expert. My cousin probably doesn't have any of her software discs, so this may turn out to be a nice time to check out the most recent OpenOffice as she is not getting any of my MS Office discs. Also, since she is currently hiding from her creditors I'm not spending too much time or energy on her computer as I expect to have trouble being paid as it is, so fuck her software.

Maybe you should open Unca Slade's Pee-Cee Reepair n' Bait Shop down there in the swamps of Georgia. Discount rates for bucktoof ex-boyfriends and cousins in credit card hell.
