Oh I realise that the only reason to whinge at Valve is the ridiculously high standard they have set themselves.

Thing is, if it wasn't Valve and they hadn't promised anything I would not have expected it at all. However it IS Valve and they DID promise it. So I'm pissed.

There is a difference between releasing new content for a game and releasing a game piece by piece. And Spore is not a good game. The concept of removing 40% of a game to sell it to you in installments is utter shit. It's killed off most of my love of gaming. I will always still play Civ and sports games, but really just about everything else can get fucked.
