Windows 7

Postby KennysRevenge on Tue May 05, 2009 3:43 pm

Microsoft released the Windows 7 Release Candidate today. I DLed it and installed in on my kids machine. I must say, I am highly impressed. I was able to get it installed and ready for use in less than 30 minutes. When it started up, it immediately found and installed the proper drivers for all of the hardware. It's not nearly the hog that Vista is either. The system requirements are:
*1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
*1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
*16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
*DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
I also installed BF2 for my son, and it installed and ran flawlessly, so it seems to be, at least somewhat, backwards compatible. If it continues to run well on their POS computer, I may be putting this on my machine.

I'm hearing nowt but good stuff about it.

Basically it's what Vista should have been to begin with.

Vista is the modern equivilent of Windows ME. Some neat stuff put into about the buggiest, slowest, most godawful piece of shit operating system in existence.

I'm gonna slap this on my HTPC. It's older than my main box, and I don't care if it goes to shit.

Microsoft posted their first quarterly loss in ages just recently. Good call on buying some stock.

Now would be a great time if that is so. More than likely their stock is at historic lows like much of the market. I think 7 is going to be big, and many will simply buy it when the good word of mouth spreads.

har har, i never said I would purchase it. Just that the public has heard so many bad things about vista that when the word about 7 starts to spread, I think it can only mean good things for microsoft.

Especially for businesses, all it takes is one middle manager to see it and like it then make the switch for the entire office.

Is there anyone here using Lunix, with good experiences ?

Cousins who installed Lunix and got an arm ripped of in a laundryaccident the same day, counts only vagely as experience, despite the situations are somehow linked

I've farted around with Knoppix, Red Hat, Ubuntu and SUSE versions but I generally stick to old XP for 99.9% of my computing. That and the fact most of my clients use XP keeps me from experimenting more with Linux distros.

I don't have much experience with GUI versions of Linux. I have to do command line Linux commands on a daily basis, and maaaaaan do I fuckin hate command line.

cd apps/spry/current
rake db:content:load FILE=~/backups/TestDataMay1.sql RAILS_ENV=production

etc. etc.

Gimme a fuckin GUI any day of the week.

Pandy got one of the release candidates on his rig. And i have to say, it is pretty impressive thus far. Everything loads very quickly, even internet browsing. We are going to have to put some more games on it to see how they perform.

The only thing i didn't like was windows media player 12. They made it much harder to stream to other devices on the network, or at least i was having a bitch of a time with it. We previously had vista's WMP11 streaming the library to his 360. But the standard folder sharing works fine.

It even works on a buddy of mine's MAC. For a financial program reason.
